Azerbaijan's steps towards renewable energy: Garadagh Solar Park
In October 2023, Azerbaijan marked a significant milestone in its renewable energy journey with the inauguration of the Garadagh Solar Park. Located in the Garadagh district, this 230-megawatt (MW) solar power plant stands as the largest operational solar facility in the Caspian region and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
Developed by Masdar, UAE's clean energy powerhouse, the Garadagh Solar Park is Azerbaijan's first foreign investment-based independent solar power project. The plant is expected to generate approximately 500 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, sufficient to power over 110,000 homes, while reducing carbon emissions by more than 200,000 tons each year.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, underscoring the collaborative efforts between the two nations in advancing sustainable energy solutions. Dr. Al Jaber emphasized the importance of such projects in diversifying the global energy mix and achieving climate goals.
The successful completion of the Garadagh Solar Park not only contributes to Azerbaijan's goal of sourcing 30% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030 but also sets a precedent for future clean energy initiatives in the region. Following this achievement, Masdar signed agreements for additional solar and wind projects totaling 1 gigawatt (GW) in Azerbaijan, further solidifying the country's commitment to a sustainable energy future.
The Garadagh Solar Park exemplifies the potential of international collaboration in addressing global sustainability challenges and serves as a model for other nations aiming to transition to cleaner energy sources.
